Suites vs. Best-of-Breed - There's a continuous ebb and flow in the debate over whether one should go for a best-of-breed component solution as opposed to the one-stop-shop suite. But it occurred to me that this distinction only exists in the world of proprietary software. In the open-source world, there's no such distinction. All components are available to all, and suites are nothing more than tried-and-true combinations of components such as the LAMP platform. Just some... Streaming Audio to Cellphones - Doc Searls got me thinking about radio (streaming audio) to handheld devices such as cellphones, and I spent some time last night discussing the opportunities with Steve Gillmor. I put together a little proof-of-concept demo. I've tested it on my Treo 600 (Sprint model) using Pocket Tunes. Sounds great, even through the speakerphone. If this works (or doesn't work) for you using other cellphones/PDAs and sreaming players, please let me know.... Ar... SMIL, You're on the Internet - Jon Udell has posted a demo of random-access MP3 audio clips using SMIL and the Real Player. This is a terrific first step towards the goals of universal virtual clips and synchronized audio and transcripts.
I'd like to create a web form on IT Conversations that allows visitors to enter a program ID and a start time to generate a SMIL file. If I kept that file on our server (or revreated it dynamically) it could then be referred to by others (i....
