Google tests home entertainment streaming device - report - (Telecompaper) Google is developing a home-entertainment system that streams music wirelessly throughout the home and would be marketed under the company's own brand, people briefed on the company's plans told the Wall Street Journal. Based on the Android OS, the device is expected to be the first hardware marketed under Google's own name. The entertainment device, in development for several years, is expected to be unveiled later this year, the paper said. The system would stream music from Google's online music-storage service and send it wirelessly to Google-designed speakers or other web-connected devices in the home. It could also stream video in future. Consumers would operate the Google system using a smartphone or tablet, although it's unclear whether the devices would have to be powered by Android. One person familiar with the matter said Google was hoping to offer the entertainment system at more-affordable prices than a similar device made by Sonos, which focuses exclusively... Alcatel-Lucent improves net profit, revenues down 12.5% - (Telecompaper) Alcatel-Lucent posted a net profit of EUR 868 million in the fourth quarter, up sharply from EUR 340 million a year earlier thanks to a tax accounting gain of EUR 353 million. The company's revenues, excluding the divested Genesys unit, reached EUR 4.256 billion, down 12.5 percent year-over-year and up 12.1 percent sequentially. Revenues fell in all geographic areas and were down 16.1 percent year-on-year at its main Networks business. The drop was the strongest in wireless, down 22.8 percent to EUR 893 million. Only the Enterprise division managed a small revenue increase of 0.3 percent. Adjusted operating profit was down 19.8 percent to EUR 316 million, and the margin fell to 7.4 percent from 8.1 percent. America Movil Q4 profits down on takeover costs - (Telecompaper) America Movil reported fourth-quarter revenues of MXN 182 billion, up 12.3 percent from a year earlier. Mobile revenues rose 15.4 percent, and fixed-line revenues were up 6.8 percent. Growth was led by mobile data services, up 27 percent on a constant currency basis, as well as expansion in fixed broadband and pay-TV. This helped offset the sharp cuts to termination rates in its home market Mexico. EBITDA rose a slower 3.9 percent to MXN 64.5 billion, hurt by the rate cuts and investments in expansion and marketing, particularly in Brazil. Operating profit was up 15.1 percent to MXN 38.3 billion, helped by lower depreciation. Net profit fell to MXN 16.3 billion from MXN 25.5 billion a year earlier, due to the weaker peso and higher financing costs after the buy-out of Telmex and share buybacks. Net debt rose to MXN 321 billion from MXN 207 billion at the close of 2010. The company finished 2011 with a total 299.6 million access lines, up 8.3 percent over the year. Mobile... Australian govt reaches licence renewal compromise - (Telecompaper) The Australian government has reached a licence renewal price compromise that ends a dispute with the mobile operators. The deal follows the announcement of caps on the amount of spectrum operators can bid on in the upcoming digital dividend auction. The industry had sought to avoid having both processes running in parallel as this would mean large capital outlays at the same time. The first spectrum renewal payments of around AUD 1 billion are due from Telstra and Vodafone in June 2013, which is less than the companies feared last year, The Australian Financial Review writes citing unnamed sources. The government valued the 800 MHz spectrum at AUD 1.4 billion in December last year, which prompted strong reactions from Telstra and Vodafone. The AUD 1 billion is split roughly equally between Telstra and Vodafone and is for 800 MHz spectrum as well as some 1800 MHz spectrum.... German court says Samsung can sell modified tablet PC - (Telecompaper) The State Court in Duesseldorf has ruled that Samsung can sell its modified tablet PC in Germany, reports Reuters. US set to clear Google takeover of Motorola - report - (Telecompaper) The US Justice Department is set to clear Google's USD 12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility as early as next week, people familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal. However, competition regulators in the US and Europe remain concerned about Google's commitment to license Motorola patents to competitors on fair terms, the paper's sources said, and will closely monitor Google's use of the patents. The European Commission has set a deadline of 13 February to decide whether to approve the acquisition. The Justice Department also is set to clear the acquisition of Nortel Networks' patent portfolio by a consortium including Apple, Microsoft, Ericsson and Research In Motion for USD 4.5 billion, people familiar with the matter told the paper. A Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment.... Vodafone maintains outlook despite weaker sales - (Telecompaper) Vodafone Group reported quarterly sales down 2.3 percent from a year earlier to GBP 11.62 billion.
